BIG PAWS RESCUE

WELCOME!

This page is dedicated to all the abandoned dogs  that are not lucky enough to be saved by Rescue.

We all say it "Oh, what a cute lil puppy" but do we think at that moment what that cute lil puppy will be in just a few months? Here's some basic information:

Large Breed puppies weigh about one and one-half pounds at birth and grow rapidly during the first year, although it may take as long as three years to reach full maturity.

Large Breed dogs eat a good amount of food compared to your average dog. They do not "eat you out of house and home" but a 40 pound bag of premium kibble will disappear very quickly. You will feed between 6 and 10 cups a day.

Large Breed dogs are prone to joint problems, bloat, ear infections,  and the list goes on....

Despite their size Large Breed dogs are house dogs. They are companion dogs and therefore want to be with you. They do not respond to well to being left out in the yard while everyone else is in the house. They will become depressed and bored. Believe us, a bored large breed dog can damage your yard to a much greater extent than a bored Chihuahua.

Your veterinarian will tell you bigger dogs mean bigger vet bills. Many veterinarian service costs are based on weight, such as anesthesia and antibiotics.

I could go on forever but here is where the responsible owner goes and researches the dog he or she wants. There are numerous links on my links page to provide you with more information. All breeds have characteristics that make the dog suitable for a certain job or a certain owner's lifestyle. Large Breed dogs make wonderful companions.....if you understand the issues above. If you are looking for a dog that will become part of your family, and you are willing to make a commitment to a large breed dog,   they  may be for you. If you are looking for a backyard watchdog, a yard ornament, or an "outside only" dog, then they are not for you.

Learn about the breed that you intend to adopt before you select the dog of your dreams. Both you and your dog will be happier.
